Wayfinding: Affordances and Agent Simulation
نویسنده
چکیده
SYNONYMS Wayfinding behavior; DEFINITION Wayfinding behavior is the purposeful, directed, and motivated movement from an origin to a specific distant destination that cannot be directly perceived by the traveler. It involves interaction between the wayfinder and the environment. Affordances are a concept from ecological psychology based on the paradigm of direct perception. They are specific combinations of the properties of substances and surfaces taken with reference to an observer. These invariant compounds are specified in ambient light—which is the result of illumination—and detected as units. Ambient light has structure and therefore information. Agent simulation is a technique of imitating the behavior of some situation or process involving one or many agents. An agent is anything that can perceive its environment through sensors and act upon it through effectors. Agents are situated in some environment and capable of autonomous action. Kevin Lynch's [1] " The Image of the City " is the first documentation of human wayfinding research in the literature. His goal was to develop a method for the evaluation of city form based on the concept of imageability, and to offer principles for city design. As part of the interviews people had to perform mental trips across their cities, describing the sequence of things and landmarks they would see along the way. Based on his investigations Lynch divided the contents of the city images into five classes: paths, edges, districts, nodes, and landmarks. These elements were described as the building blocks in the process of making firm, differentiated structures at the urban scale and have been the basis for later wayfinding research.

Human Wayfinding in Unfamiliar Buildings: a Simulation with a Cognizing Agent
Existing cognitively based computational models for wayfinding focus primarily on the exploration of mental representations rather than the information needs for wayfinding. It is important to consider information needs because people trying to find their ways in unfamiliar environments do not have a previously acquired mental representation but depend on external information. The fundamental t...
متن کاملUsing cognitive agent-based simulation for the evaluation of indoor wayfinding systems
This paper presents a novel approach to simulate human wayfinding behaviour incorporating visual cognition into a software agent for a computer aided evaluation of wayfinding systems in large infrastructures. The proposed approach follows the Sense-Plan-Act paradigm comprised of a model for visual attention, navigation behaviour and pedestrian movement. Stochastic features of perception are inc...
متن کاملAgent-Based Simulation of Spatial Cognition and Wayfinding in Building Fire Emergency Evacuation
There is a need to understand how people and environment react in a fire building emergency. Sometimes in the wayfinding process decision errors may occur mainly based on topological errors of the signage. A situation is critical if a decision about which path to take cannot be made with certainty, especially in a crisis situation. An agent-based simulation of human’s behavior in escaping from ...
متن کاملAn Agent-based Indoor Wayfinding Based on Digital Sign System
Developing effective urban planning approaches is a major challenge for outdoor and indoor environments. Wayfinding in unfamiliar indoor environments is a prime task which everyone would be encountered. The development of assistive technologies to aid wayfinding is hampered by the lack of reliable and cost-efficient methods providing location information in the environment. We have applied RFID...
متن کاملConflicting Tendencies in Pedestrian Wayfinding Decisions: a Multi-Agent Model Encompassing Proxemics and Imitation
Computer-based simulation of pedestrian dynamics is a consolidated application of agent-based models but it still presents open challenges. The wayfinding of pedestrians is a fundamental aspect to allow the application of such models on complex environments. Several novel approaches have recently been proposed in the literature, yet the lack of empirical knowledge still limits the reliability o...
